<작가노트>
과수원 (Ochard)
나의 어린 시절은 과수원의 흙 냄새와 함께 한 삶이었다. 어린 시절 먹거리의 낭만과 아름다운 꽃들의 기억도 있지만, 가시덩굴이 무성한 탱자나무, 날카로운 철조망으로 굳게 닫혀있는 울타리는가 안겨준 미묘한 감정도 있다. 어느 덧 고목으로 변해버린 과수원의 수목들은 늙으신 아버지의 초췌한 모습을 보는 것 같다. 과수원의 사과나무의 생태와 사람이 태어나서 죽음을 맞이하는 순간까지의 통과의례를 견주어 보았다.
땅과 한평생을 살아오신 아버지의 모습을 과수원의 수목들의 생태에 견주어 표현하였다. 땅을 평생 지켜온 아버지의 몸, 손과 발이 과수목의 원줄기와 가지라는 관점에서 동일한 시각으로 보았다. 이는 언제부터인가 내 마음속에서 퇴색하는 아버지의 모습과 과수원의 풍경이 하나로 비춰지고 있다. 과수 한 그루 한 그루 그 자체가 아버지의 수족과 흡사하고, 수목들의 삶은 아버지의 삶과 유사하다는 느낌을 갖게 했다.
먼 훗날 과수원에서 다시 볼 수 없게 되었을 때, 아버지에 대한 그리움을 간직하기 위해서 나는 팔순이 넘으신 아버지의 흔적과 사랑을 사진 속에 남기는 작업을 계속하고 있다.
바늘구멍사진기(pinhole camera)로 담은 과수원의 사과나무와 늙으신 아버지의 이미지는 어린 시절을 되돌아 볼 수 있게 하는 매개체 구실을 할 것이다.
현재의 시각으로 본 과수원은 너무도 초라하고 퇴락한 시골의 조그만 공간이지만, 기억 속에 각인된 과수원은 내 삶의 전부라고도 말할 수 있는 커다란 안식처이다.
바늘구멍사진기는 초점 범위가 넓고 클로즈업을 해도 피사체가 왜곡되지 않기 때문에 과수원의 정경을 표현하는데 효과적이다. 가까이 있는 과일과 꽃 등은 크게 묘사하면서도 뒤에 있는 풍경과 인물 등은 조화롭게 표현하여 원근감을 강조할 수 있다. 또 장시간의 노출과 노파인더(no-finder)에 의해 재현되기 때문에 우연성도 나타나기도 한다.
이러한 바늘구멍사진기로 작업을 하는 동안, 나는 사진을 촬영하는 동안 피사체와 오랫동안 교감할 수 있는 계기가 되었다.

Ochard
Growing up in an orchard, I can't think back of my childhood without thinking the smell of earth. Thinking back, I remember not only the romantic sentiment about the childhood snacks and beautiful flowers, but also the delicate and complicated feelings of hardy-orange trees that are covered all over with the thorn vines, and the firmly closed fences with sharp barbed-wire entanglements. I see my father's haggard face in the old fruit trees that have been growing old so quickly over the time. I've compared the life of an apple tree in the orchard to that of person from the moment of birth to the end where he has to face the death.
I wanted to express my father's life, who has worked his whole life with the earth, compared with the lives of fruit trees in the orchard. I view father's body, arms and legs as trunks and branches of the fruit trees. For some time now, I've been seeing my withering father and scenery of the orchard as one and the same in my heart. Each and every tree in the orchard is like my fathers arms and legs, and the lives of the trees are like my father's life.
Some day in the far future, for when I won't be able to see my father again in the orchard, I keep taking photos of my over 80 year-old father to reserve his footsteps and his love in the pictures.
In the photo, I took with the pinhole camera, contains the apple tree and my old father in the orchard. This image of him will be the medium that brings me to look back my childhood.
The orchard, I'm looking at now, is shabby and small place in the country, but the orchard in my memory brings me such comfort and means everything to me.
The pinhole camera is very effective to express the scenery of the orchard because it has wide focus range and it doesn't distort the subject even in close-up shots. It can emphasize the scenography by delineating close-up fruits and flowers large, and expressing the background scenery and characters in harmony. Also, it sometimes displays contingency because of long hour exposure and no-finder.
While I was working with this pinhole camera, it brought me a chance to respond with subjects for long time.
